Victor Kuznetsov pouring latte art

Hey, I’m Victor.

If it touches my life, I will turn it into data, build tools around it, and try to help the next person through the same problem.

I’m an engineer in the San Francisco Bay Area, and almost everything on this site started at home. My daughter’s glucose moved from a phone to screens around the apartment. Falling asleep to TV shows turned into a Mac app, because my wife kept switching off my laptop for me.

We moved from Moscow to California at the end of 2016. I love the ocean and the nature around it: I fish, swim, surf, or just sit and watch the water. On land I hike the coast and rate its coffee shops. You can see what I’m building on the projects page.

Work, briefly

  1. Lorsey AI

Co-founder and CTO of an education startup. It pulls data from the tools schools already use and finds each student’s learning gaps.

  2. Veedma

Co-founder and CTO of an online clinic for men’s hormone health. I built the patient platform, from sign-up and lab results to messaging with doctors and billing. More about Veedma

  3. Smartcat

Director of Software Engineering on an AI translation platform, where we launched AI Image Translator.

  4. Visier

After Visier acquired Yva.ai, I brought our team and product into Visier. The technology became Visier Workplace Dynamics.

  5. Findo and Yva.ai

Co-founded Findo, a search across personal cloud accounts, which became Yva.ai: workplace analytics built on Microsoft 365, Teams, Zoom and Slack. Visier acquired it. Co-inventor of three granted US patents from that work. Two more applications were published but not granted. 6. ABBYY

Led FineReader Online and its API, which powered FineScanner.

  7. Early years

Web developer at Rosinter Restaurants in Moscow, then two startups in Italy.

Fun facts

  • I won a latte art class at Chromatic Coffee, my favorite coffee shop in the Bay Area.
  • Before every trip to a new place, I pick the coffee shops I want to visit. Then I rate them. Coffee list
  • More than once, someone has recommended my own coffee list to me.
  • I once ran into Andrew Ng at a coffee shop in Santa Cruz.
  • I turned back below the summit of Mt. Whitney: more snow than I had planned for, and rangers who let nobody camp because of the bears. One lesson: never buy a $50 backpack on Amazon.
  • I have done a tandem skydive from 13,000 feet. The first five seconds felt like space.
  • I once hiked 29 km with 1.5 km of climbing in Yosemite on a plan I made the night before. The next day hurt.
  • I finished the Race of Heroes mud run. I am not telling you my time.
  • Our space heater did not talk to Home Assistant, so I wrote up how to make it. The guide
  • At my first hackathon, C# turned out not to be very popular. I joined a team anyway, and we had a working app in a few hours.
  • I fall asleep to shows, and I could never find a Mac sleep timer I liked, so I built one. Guess I’m a Swift developer now. Watch Me While I Fall Asleep
  • I have no illusions that I will ever know English better than Russian, so I built a translator that keeps my style. Translate Like Me

What I believe

  • I don’t share the view that AI needs its own moderation. Whatever tool made a picture, it should be judged by the same rules. RAIW
  • The only proof of judgment isn’t in words about it, it’s in decisions you can point to.
  • The model is not the product. The product is the harness that makes the model reliable. The post
  • The cheaper execution gets, the more expensive the person who knows why.
  • Listening costs more than flattening.
  • Stop optimizing developer productivity. Start restructuring the company. The post
